Well, Love Story<\/em>ans, we\u2019ve made it to the penultimate episode of the show, and I\u2026 am weirdly depressed. (Not just because this particular installment is tough sledding, which it is, but because we\u2019re nearing the end of the JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette story, and we all know how that goes<\/a>.) At least we still have the finale next week, and I guess we\u2019ll always have Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly\u2019s stunning good looks?<\/p>\n

Below, find every single thought I had\u2014quite literally\u2014about Season 1, Episode 8 of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette:<\/em><\/p>\n

  1. We get it! Carolyn smokes like Don Draper on a delayed flight to LA!<\/li>\n
  2. I wish I looked this good while sitting around depressed at home in a tank top.<\/li>\n
  3. Also, I commend Carolyn for finding so many places to perch in her apartment; I only have two (bed and couch).<\/li>\n
  4. \u201cA journalist\u2019s book party in Midtown\u201d being \u201cviolently fine\u201d checks out.<\/li>\n
  5. Aw, Anthony \ud83d\ude41<\/li>\n
  6. Sorry, was that a\u2026Lizzie Grubman reference?<\/li>\n
  7. Is there a different \u201990s-famous publicist named Lizzie that I\u2019m not aware of?<\/li>\n
  8. Never forget that Grubman went to my high school, which really checks out because so did Roy Cohn<\/a> and one of the most prominently quoted \u201ccruel kid\u201d anti-woke influencers from this New York<\/em> magazine story.<\/a><\/li>\n
  9. This loft is so weirdly laid out.<\/li>\n
  10. Aw, Sade! Harkening back to their happier days<\/a> \ud83d\ude41<\/li>\n
  11. Oh man, John referring to Carolyn\u2019s confidence and drive in the past tense would make me sooooooo furious.<\/li>\n
  12. You\u2019re the one whose fame has trapped her in this loft like a lightning bug in a Mason jar, man!<\/li>\n
  13. As someone who has some experience with depression: the best way to deal with it in your partner is usually not<\/em> by implying that making excuses for them is wearing on you.<\/li>\n
  14. KFC bucket spotted!<\/li>\n
  15. Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, the fast food diva that you are.<\/li>\n
  16. Ugh, marriage seems hard.<\/li>\n
  17. Even if you\u2019re not internationally famous.<\/li>\n
  18. God, their schedule!<\/li>\n
  19. If my year was booked out a year in advance, I\u2019d be miserable too (even if it\u2019s all fancy engagements).<\/li>\n
  20. \u201cEvery minute of the day is accounted for\u201d is my actual nightmare.<\/li>\n
  21. I can\u2019t disagree with John\u2019s cousin that yogurt for lunch is \u201csome Weight Watchers shit.\u201d<\/li>\n
  22. The \u201cno TV during the day\u201d decree, though, would give me instant hives.<\/li>\n
  23. Much like Carolyn, I want the option!<\/li>\n
  24. John saying that \u201cspending your day in front of the TV on a beautiful summer\u2019s day is just wasteful\u201d just made him 30% less hot to me.<\/li>\n
  25. \u201cVogue<\/em>, now that\u2019s a magazine.\u201d<\/li>\n
  26. Say that, girlina!<\/li>\n
  27. Okay, I have to disagree with Carolyn on the midnight clambakes, which sound nice to me.<\/li>\n
  28. Okay, writing in Lady Di\u2019s car accident was smart, as I\u2019m now considering the parallels between her and CBK (as, I assume, the writers want me to).<\/li>\n
  29. This is clearly hitting John hard, but him bitching at Carolyn about whether the dishes are clean or not is also profoundly unsexy to me.<\/li>\n
  30. It\u2019s so weird to see someone drink water from a glass in the age of Owala.<\/a><\/li>\n
  31. I will never not be annoyed at how free cis, straight, white men are to run at night.<\/li>\n
  32. Yet another Radiohead needle drop!<\/a><\/li>\n
  33. Ah, a post-run cig. How very \u201990s.<\/li>\n
  34. Oh no, Diana\u2019s dead and Carolyn isn\u2019t taking it well.<\/li>\n
  35. Nor is John, for that matter, who\u2019s pissed that Carolyn keeps watching the news and dares to compare him and his sister to Diana\u2019s kids.<\/li>\n
  36. I don\u2019t really get his point, though; is he saying that Harry and William are better off because they\u2019re royals, or that he and Caroline were better off because they lived a more normal life? I mean, a dead parent is a dead parent!<\/li>\n
  37. John seems earnestly heartbroken, but his fundamental misunderstanding of what Carolyn is going through is just, like\u2026can you muster an ounce of empathy?<\/li>\n
  38. Well, this whole bit about John watching his mom suffer after his dad\u2019s death and asking, \u201cWhy couldn\u2019t she just play with me?\u201d is making me cry my eyes out.<\/li>\n
  39. Carolyn, too, for that matter.<\/li>\n
  40. \u201cI watched her die twice, and now it feels like I\u2019m watching you slip away.\u201d Oof.<\/li>\n
  41. \u201cYou\u2019re choosing the darkness\u201d\u2026I mean, is she, king? Or is she just depressed?<\/li>\n
  42. Then again, I wouldn\u2019t want to explain clinical depression to anyone who grew up doing a JFK Jr. level of tough-it-out outdoor activities.<\/li>\n
  43. Aw, this parallel of Carolyn holding John and telling him to breathe after his mother\u2019s death is extremely sweet and sad.<\/li>\n
  44. Oop, it\u2019s two years later, and things are not<\/em> going well in the Bessette-Kennedy household.<\/li>\n
  45. Same loft, whole different marriage.<\/li>\n
  46. This shot of Carolyn under the glass coffee table is nice.<\/li>\n
  47. Rollneck sweater<\/a> spotted once again!<\/li>\n
  48. Oof, John\u2019s on crutches and Carolyn is blonder than ever, so we must be getting close to the accident.<\/li>\n
  49. Cleaning up after a dinner party is really a hot zone for marital disputes (as is looking for parking, for that matter).<\/li>\n
  50. My child-of-divorce ass is so stressed out by the palpable tension in the air.<\/li>\n
  51. John\u2019s reference to \u201cmy room\u201d\u2026\u2026..yikes.<\/li>\n
  52. I mean, do we have any evidence that John and Carolyn were actually sleeping in separate bedrooms near the end of their life?<\/li>\n
  53. I could google this, but I won\u2019t.<\/li>\n
  54. I get the time-jump and all, but it results in the incredibly awful, Albee-play energy between these formerly amorous spouses feeling kind of out of nowhere.<\/li>\n
  55. Andr\u00e9 Leon Talley reference!<\/li>\n
  56. Imagining another version of history in which CBK was a Vogue<\/em> girl (and I was her union steward).<\/li>\n
  57. This is a deep dialogue cut, but Carolyn telling John that he makes her feel \u201clike I am this dead weight you are desperate to shed\u201d is reminding me of Gone Girl<\/em>\u2019s Amy Elliott Dunne writing in her diary that her husband makes her feel like \u201csomething to be jettisoned, if necessary,” which is interesting, because Rosamund Pike based her performance as Amy partly on (you guessed it!) Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.<\/a><\/li>\n

  59. Oh, babes, if you\u2019re still dividing your social world into \u201cyour friends\u201d and \u201cmy friends\u201d this far into the marriage, it\u2019s so joever.<\/li>\n
  60. Were people saying \u201cyour thing\u201d to mean one\u2019s line of work in the late \u201990s?<\/li>\n
  61. I\u2019m not so sure.<\/li>\n
  62. \u201cIs that what you\u2019re doing all day alone in the apartment? Enjoying your life?\u201d Ugh, shut the fuck up, John.<\/li>\n
  63. I mean, I will say that Pidgeon and Kelly are really capturing the exhaustion and misery of reaching the point in a relationship where you\u2019re just talking past each other.<\/li>\n
  64. Bro, if you threw Jackie O. in my face while I was depressed, I\u2019d freak out, too.<\/li>\n
  65. Oh, shit, we\u2019re going nuclear<\/em> with the mommy issues.<\/li>\n
  66. \u201cYou don\u2019t know how lucky you are that I never introduced you to my mother, because she never would have encouraged this\u2026us.\u201d<\/li>\n
  67. I\u2019m reeling a bit! That\u2019s so mean!<\/li>\n
  68. I fully get why Carolyn then pulls out the trump card of her mom telling her not to marry John before the wedding.<\/a><\/li>\n
  69. And now we get down to the real meat of the conflict (John\u2019s Senate run).<\/li>\n
  70. Setting aside two lunches a week for your wife\u2026what a prince.<\/li>\n
  71. \u201cJohn, you\u2019re not interested in me.\u201d Ugh. Sad.<\/li>\n
  72. Okay, a little vulnerability from John in this moment is nice.<\/li>\n
  73. \u201cI miss the person I fell in love with\u201d is such a crock of straight-guy shit, which Carolyn correctly calls out.<\/li>\n
  74. \u201cYou want the cold, unattainable, shiny version of me that\u2019s like a trophy\u201d\u2026\u2026\u2026\u2026TEA!<\/li>\n
  75. I mean, it\u2019s true that John didn\u2019t make Carolyn quit Calvin Klein, I guess.<\/li>\n
  76. Never, ever quit your job for a man, ladies!<\/li>\n
  77. \u201cYou\u2019re America\u2019s son, and I am just another tragedy you bravely endure.\u201d<\/li>\n
  78. I mean, yeah, that was rough stuff, but John, don\u2019t go to a hotel!<\/li>\n
  79. Okay, I know I say \u201cEmmy for Sarah Pidgeon\u201d a lot, but watching a bereft and completely abandoned Carolyn softly cry as John leaves is actually fucking heartbreaking, and I feel like a lot of actresses couldn\u2019t have pulled it off to this degree.<\/li>\n
  80. Am I ever going to stop crying?<\/li>\n
  81. Indeed, I need to be at a dinner shortly and my eyes are scarlet.<\/li>\n
