The latest to be revived in 2026 are square nail designs. \u201cSquare nails are a huge trend at the moment,\u201d says celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey<\/a>. \u201cThe 2000s are back, with brands like Miu Miu<\/a> bringing back nostalgic fashion, so of course nail trends<\/a> follow suit.\u201d<\/p>\n Beloved by everyone from Dua Lipa<\/a> to Kylie Jenner<\/a>, square nail designs can be striking and bold, or more minimal and low-maintenance, depending on your preference. \u201cWe\u2019ve become accustomed to the refined, whereas this shape embraces a bolder structure, which can take a little more confidence to wear,\u201d says professional manicurist Julia Diogo<\/a>. You just need to be mindful of creating a squared-off tip. \u201cThe square shape suits any nail length\u2013but at the moment, medium to longer lengths are trending,\u201d Humphrey shares.<\/p>\n The trend also works well with vibrant patterns, colors, and cute motifs, like dots, shimmery sheer shades, and silver glitter lines. \u201cSquare French nails<\/a> are super cool with a bright white tip,\u201d Humphrey says, adding that the shape works well for a softer, more natural-looking tip, too. \u201cIt\u2019s all about tapping into the nostalgia.\u201d<\/p>\n Square nails have a straight, flat top (or, to use its technical name, free edge). The sharp top and sides give the trending nail shape<\/a> its name.<\/p>\n Call it a return of the 2000s, or perhaps a clean girl backlash<\/a>, but square nails are striking and sharp\u2013nothing like the gently curved almond<\/a> or classic rounded styles that were the norm in the late 2010s and early 2020s. \u201cY2K trends<\/a> have been bringing this nail shape right back, and I see them having even more of a resurgence this summer,\u201d Diogo shares.<\/p>\n Square tips work best on stronger nails, as the shape can break easily. Humphrey advises that those with longer talons should use a strong formula, such as acrylic<\/a>, hard gel, or Polygel. \u201cThere\u2019s also the Gel X system, a gel press-on nail<\/a> that offers many square lengths and shapes,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n \u201cThe main difference is created by the corners,\u201d Diogo explains. Square nails have a sharper, cleaner edge, whereas the corners on squoval nails<\/a> are softer. \u201cThe square edge creates a more structured-looking nail bed, while squoval shaping is subtle and rounded.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSquare nails are great for narrow, uniform nail beds,\u201d Diogo explains. \u201cWe need some length to achieve a square, so you can start by trimming the nails to a medium length,\u201d she adds. \u201cI\u2019d also invest in a cuticle nipper and deluxe metal tool to really push back those cuticles<\/a> and extend the nail bed,\u201d which is exactly what this shape needs.<\/p>\n The final step is to grab a fine, crisp file and file the nails flat in one direction. You just need to angle it straight across in one movement to achieve a perfect square.<\/p>\n While square nails are shorter than both almond and oval nails, the sharp corners of square nails bring stress points, which can easily catch or snag.
