On Saturday, Nishimura and the six other models gathered at Madonna\u2019s Manhattan home to prepare for the Met, where they met the singer for the first time. \u201cShe was extremely sweet. She\u2019s a consummate professional and a true diva in the positive sense,\u201d she says. \u201cShe had the gravitas and that professionalism that I think we all admire.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once the pop-star put on the cape and Philip Treacy hat<\/a> (the milliner even FaceTimed in for the fitting), they got to work. \u201cWe rehearsed only four or so times, and we just assigned our spots,\u201d Nishimura says.<\/p>\n

On Monday, the group returned to Madonna\u2019s house, where they got ready in her rehearsal space. \u201cWe were all ooh<\/em>ing and ahh<\/em>ing over each other\u2019s dresses,\u201d she says. Then, a Sprinter van whisked them away to the Met, where they arrived between Bad Bunny and Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner.<\/p>\n

By the time they arrived, \u201cthere was a huge queue of celebrities and designers and people waiting to still go up the steps,\u201d Nishimura says, counting Marc Jacobs and Alexa Chung. But they breezed straight past the line. \u201cCelebrity is sort of like Mount Olympus,\u201d Nishimura says. \u201cMadonna\u2019s still a queen there, and we\u2019re just her nymphs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The singer had the steps to herself for her five-minute performance, replete with a custom soundtrack. \u201cIt\u2019s funny, I wasn\u2019t nervous at all,\u201d she says. \u201cThe moment wasn\u2019t really about us. It was about us as a collective, which makes things a lot less scary.\u201d<\/p>\n

So what does one do after they\u2019ve just escorted Madonna up the Met Gala steps? \u201cWe had to take the cape back down the steps,\u201d she says. What happened next could send even the gods crashing down to earth: \u201cAt the end, Beyonc\u00e9 turns the corner,\u201d Nishimura says. \u201cThe photographer started screaming at us, \u2018Get out of the shot, you\u2019re ruining the shot!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
