As the partner of a beauty editor, he\u2019s used to my experiments for work, but seeing me standing on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/vibration-plates\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">vibration plate<\/a> wearing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/best-led-face-masks\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">glowing red LED mask<\/a> was a shock, even for him. I\u2019d seen vibrating plates\u2014and what they could do for my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/how-to-do-lymphatic-drainage-massage-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">lymphatic system<\/a>\u2014all over my TikTok feed, and finally had to try one myself.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the lymphatic system, and how does it affect our bodies?<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cThe lymphatic system is a silent but incredibly important system in the body\u2014a bit like the body&#8217;s waste disposal system,\u201d says <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sigrid.ilumaa\/?hl=en\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sigrid.ilumaa\/?hl=en&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/sigrid.ilumaa\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sigrid Ilumaa<\/a>, a lymphatic health expert and the founder of Ilumaa Lymphatic. \u201cEverything that doesn&#8217;t belong in the body\u2014dead cells, bacteria, fats\u2014is collected by the [lymphatic system] and transported to the lymph nodes,\u201d where it is broken down and drained back into the bloodstream and eventually removed by the body. If the lymphatic system can&#8217;t properly remove the \u201cwaste,\u201d our bodies can exhibit symptoms such as heavy legs, fatigue, water retention, and skin problems.<\/p>\n<h2>How does a vibration plate activate your lymphatic system?<\/h2>\n<p>The lymphatic system doesn\u2019t have its own pump to move this fluid waste (called lymph) throughout your body, so it depends on physical movement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTensing and releasing the muscles is what transports the lymph fluid upwards,\u201d Ilumaa says. This is why the lymphatic system needs to be stimulated regularly. Otherwise, too much waste will get trapped in the body. This is where the vibration plate comes into play: \u201cWhen you stand on the plate, it throws the body off balance\u2014and the muscles react immediately, especially the reflex and joint muscles,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n<p>The frequency also plays an important role. Lower frequencies ensure a change between tension and relaxation, which promotes the pumping effect,\u201d Ilumaa says, adding that she recommends staying below 30 Hertz.<\/p>\n<p>Still, research is limited, so using a vibration plate shouldn\u2019t be your only way to stimulate your lymphatic system. According to a medically reviewed article from <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/how-to-improve-your-lymphatic-system.h00-159852189.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/how-to-improve-your-lymphatic-system.h00-159852189.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mdanderson.org\/cancerwise\/how-to-improve-your-lymphatic-system.h00-159852189.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center<\/a>, the lymphatic system can be stimulated by \u201clow-impact cardio with gentle movements,\u201d such as shoulder rolls and marching while seated in a chair; deep breathing exercises; and other activities that \u201cengage large muscle groups,\u201d like walking, swimming, and yoga.<\/p>\n<h2>I tested the vibration plate every day for a month<\/h2>\n<p>Over the course of a month, I used a vibration plate every morning for about 10 minutes. According to Ilumma, that\u2019s enough time since \u201cit\u2019s about activation, not exhaustion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I made sure to keep my knees bent so my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/leg-strength-brain-health\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">leg muscles<\/a> stayed activated. After my first session, I noticed that I felt relaxed and light. After a few days, I felt less puffy and wasn\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/water-retention-foods\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">retaining water as much<\/a>\u2014my rings were looser, and my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/beauty\/skin\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">skin<\/a> was less sensitive to pressure. Another positive was that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/tech-neck-pain-lines-wrinkles\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">tension in my neck<\/a>\u2014caused by too much time at the computer and carrying a heavy purse\u2014was noticeably reduced.<\/p>\n<h2>My takeaways<\/h2>\n<p>There was one benefit from standing on a vibration plate that I didn\u2019t expect: Improved mental health. Standing on the plate not only helped me wake up, but it was also a calm start to my day. Instead of listening to music or podcasts like I usually do during the day, I decided to spend this time in the morning in silence.
