And for some, that means bringing a little greenery into your home by using earthy color palettes in your interior design. Maybe you\u2019ve been toying with the idea of getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/why-is-moss-having-a-moment\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">mossy<\/a> rug, or found yourself gravitating toward an olive couch. Maybe you\u2019re thinking of painting your bedroom walls a rich brown, or crafting a cozy, neutral-toned reading nook that takes decor inspiration from a treehouse?<\/p>\n<p>If so, you\u2019re in good company: Earthy colors seem to be everywhere in 2026. This year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/why-is-moss-having-a-moment\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">actual moss<\/a>, grass, and other earthy materials have made appearances at fashion weeks and at art museums, including <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/exhibition\/atrium-stair-klara-hosnedlova\/e-new-museum.html\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/exhibition\/atrium-stair-klara-hosnedlova\/e-new-museum.html&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newmuseum.org\/exhibition\/atrium-stair-klara-hosnedlova\/e-new-museum.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a flax and hemp sculpture<\/a> by artist Kl\u00e1ra Hosnedlov\u00e1 that recently debuted at the New Museum. At least one fashion designer\u2019s collection included a piece of clothing that looked like a wearable, living terrarium. Interior designers have noticed the down-to-earth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/interior-design-trends-2026\" class=\"text link\">trend at home<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n<p>David Flack of <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/flack.studio\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/flack.studio\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/flack.studio\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Flack Studio<\/a> in Melbourne\u2014who designed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/inside-australian-phenomenon-troye-sivans-soulful-melbourne-home\" class=\"text link\">Troye Sivan\u2019s home<\/a> in the Australian city\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/color-trends-2026-interior-design\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">previously told <em>Vogue<\/em><\/a> that he expected to see more earthy brown and umber-based colors in interiors in 2026. \u201cMuddy neutrals feel like a warm hug\u2014they can command a larger space and a through-line with connecting colors throughout the home,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>That said, you may want to wade into the water before diving in headfirst. When I think of earth tones, I mainly think of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/how-to-style-sage-green\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"text link\">sage green<\/a>, sand, terracotta, and charcoal. But the definition can be a bit broader than that, expanding to include a range of colors unified more by their vibrancy than their shade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, earthy colors are hues that feel rooted in the natural world,\u201d interior designer <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/dunnamzerbini.com\/about\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/dunnamzerbini.com\/about\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/dunnamzerbini.com\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kelly Zerbini<\/a> tells <em>Vogue<\/em>. \u201cThey tend to be slightly muted versions of their pure color, with the saturation dialed back. People often confuse earthy with muddy, but it doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re limited to beige and brown.\u201d Zerbini, a principal at New York-based Dunnam Zerbini Design, adds that she thinks of colors found in nature\u2014like clay, olive, camel, ochre, slate blue, and moss\u2014as earth tones, which she likes to call \u201ccolor non colors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTechnically, something may be green or blue, but once it\u2019s softened into an earthy version, it begins to behave almost like a neutral and becomes incredibly versatile,\u201d Zerbini says.<\/p>\n<h2>What is the appeal of earthy colors in interior design and home decor?<\/h2>\n<p>For <a data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/www.yellowhousearchitects.com\/team\/\" class=\"external-link text link\" data-event-click=\"{&quot;element&quot;:&quot;ExternalLink&quot;,&quot;outgoingURL&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.yellowhousearchitects.com\/team\/&quot;}\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yellowhousearchitects.com\/team\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth Graziolo<\/a>, founder and principal at Yellow House Architects, the appeal of earthy colors is that they provide \u201cmoody comfort,\u201d she says. \u201cIf our client is looking for a calm space, these types of colors are where we try to steer their direction.\u201d Graziolo notes that in her work, she aims for timeless design instead of adhering to trends, but she has noticed a shift toward earthy colors in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also think they are evolving beyond trend status,\u201d Graziolo adds. \u201cFor years, interiors leaned very cool and minimal, and now there is a collective desire for spaces that feel warmer, softer, and more human. But Zerbini recommends taking a layered approach. \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to layer multiple shades of earthy tones together. A room doesn\u2019t always need one obvious pop of color to feel dynamic,\u201d she says. \u201cI often treat earthy tones as the neutrals of a space and build them up in layers. These colors play nicely together and create richness without feeling overly designed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also helps to think of placement within your home. Graziolo says earthy colors can help create a welcoming and familiar atmosphere, so she loves to use them in foyers and entry spaces, as well as cozy dens and libraries made for unplugging and relaxing a bit.
