In Aespa\u2019s new music video for \u201cLemonade\u201d\u2014the title track on their second studio album<\/a>, out today\u2014the K-pop girl group swaps its signature Y3K aesthetic for mod fashion<\/a>.<\/p>\n The colorful shift dresses, bouffant hair, and clustered eyelashes will strike fans as a major break from the sleek, Matrix<\/em>-like image that Karina<\/a>, Giselle<\/a>, Winter<\/a>, and NingNing<\/a> have cultivated since their 2020 debut. But the change reflects an evolution in Aespa\u2019s style across the board.<\/p>\n \u201cI think a lot of people know Aespa and love us for our sharp and futuristic sound,\u201d leader Karina tells Vogue<\/em>. \u201cBut with Lemonade<\/em>, we wanted to push that feeling even further. We\u2019ve been calling it a more \u2018sour\u2019 version of Aespa\u2014still very much us, but with a stronger, more electrifying flavor.\u201d<\/p>\n Aespa\u2019s artist visual team explains that the inspiration behind the 1950s-esque fashion came directly from the lead song\u2019s retro feel and the parallel worlds portrayed in the video. (This, after all, is a group that loves a strong narrative concept<\/a>.) But in other ways, \u201cLemonade\u201d is a quintessential Aespa track\u2014a catchy anthem for self-empowerment along the lines of prior hits like \u201cRich Man\u201d<\/a> and \u201cWhiplash.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cI think Lemonade<\/em> is really about not letting outside noise affect you too much,\u201d Giselle says. \u201cNo matter how chaotic things get, it\u2019s about staying true to yourself and moving forward with confidence. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.\u201d<\/p>\n The messaging suits a girl group that seems to be constantly leveling up. Just this month, Karina<\/a> and NingNing<\/a> made their Met Gala debuts; and this summer, Aespa will play Lollapalooza, marking another major milestone.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re preparing something special that fans will be seeing for the first time there,\u201d Winter says, teasing their festival set. \u201cWe\u2019re really excited about it and can\u2019t wait to share that moment with everyone in Chicago.\u201d<\/p>\n Shortly after playing Lolla, the group will be off to Seoul to launch their next world tour, called Synk: Complaexity. The members will return to the United States in the fall, playing arenas across the country.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re preparing a lot of new performances and different sides of Aespa that we haven\u2019t shown before,\u201d NingNing says. \u201cThe production and visuals are also on a bigger scale this time, so I\u2019m really excited for everyone to finally experience it and see what we\u2019ve been working on.\u201d<\/p>\n
