Monochrome dressing is surprisingly hard to nail: too much of the same fabric and density, and it’s just matchy-matchy and a little dated. David and Victoria Beckham—who have run the gamut of coordinating couples style through the decades—made the case for all-midnight blue on their most recent date night.
The couple stepped out for dinner at Salam in New York, hand-in-hand and sleek in navy. Victoria, of course, dressed in her own designs and kept to her polished, luxurious style: a strong-shouldered, oversized blazer with a white t-shirt underneath, and matching wide-leg suit pants which were cinched by a brown belt. She accessorized with her signature oversized aviator-style sunglasses and wore her now-blonde highlighted hair long and loose. David, meanwhile, leaned into his own workwear-heavy vibe: he wore a collared dark blue jacket with a navy kit and white tee, matching chino-style pants (with a silver chain hanging from the pocket), and white sneakers, styled with red-lensed square sunglasses.
The Beckhams avoided looking too twinny by keeping to their own aesthetics—V.B in a sweeping silhouette with a quietly sophisticated air, David more fitted and casual, a little British gentleman—although from their archive of iconic couples looks, we know that’s something they’re not totally averse to.
They’ve been making the most of their time in New York, celebrating and promoting the Victoria Beckham Gap collaboration. Out for another date night at one of the designer’s favorite restaurants, COQODAQ, Victoria elevated her all-blacks in a body-contouring beaded pencil skirt and black croc Hermès Mini Kelly (one of many in her collection), and David opted for a chocolate brown Prada coat with the collar popped. Of course, they shielded their faces with their own sunnies: Victoria in XXL Rick Owens aviators and David in his sepia-toned pair. Statement eyewear is where they both tend to meet minds.
Date night dressing can be difficult to get right, and as a famous couple, there’s many routes to choose. You could stick to polar opposite styles as per Justin and Hailey Bieber, pledge a joint allegiance to The Row like Harry Styles and Zoe Kravitz, or forge your own converging fashion paths a la Rihanna and A$AP Rocky. But as David and Victoria Beckham show, finding that one coordinating detail is more than enough.
