When it comes to celebrity sightings, there is a hierarchy—the elusive Olsen twins are right at the top.
There are the entry-level Instagram baddies, the stars you might see en-route to the front row at fashion week, and then, you’ve got the former actors and current creative directors at The Row. Beloved for their disheveled rich girl style, their unbrushed hair and wine-stained Le City bags have made Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen cult figures for anyone who pays close attention to celebrity outfits.
In an (even more rare) joint sighting in New York on Thursday, the Olsen twins were photographed taking the concept of “twinning” to new heights. Both toted crocodile-effect Margaux bags, and they were each in swaddling coats and their signature, casually draped scarves. (It’s spring, guys.) While the likes of Zoë Kravitz and Jennifer Lawrence are walking billboards for the Olsens’s brand, The Row, it’s important to remember who actually invented the frazzled-cool-girl-in-deceptively-expensive-basics approach.

When they are seen together, the former child stars often dress in complementary style—the Met Gala, which is coming up on Monday, has been the backdrop for a few of these moments: their matching vintage leather courtesy of Chanel in 2019, coordinating boho lace in 2017, and the same-same-but-different black and gold ensembles they wore in 2016.
And what makes for an everydayOlsen Outfit™? It’s all about the accessories. Like said drapey and gargantuan scarves in every fringe and paisley iteration, wraparound black shades, and low-key sneakers. (Who said Sambas are dead? Not Mary-Kate.) Then, of course, there’s The Row handbag Hall of Fame: there’s the favorite Margaux bag, sure, but the Olsens have also produced heavy hitters like the India and the slouchy, utilitarian Park tote bag.
