It’s not every day that we get an Amal Clooney spotting, but the human rights lawyer (and all-around fashion star) emerged out in the streets of New York City yesterday. The occasion? She was on hand to stand by husband George Clooney’s side at the 51st Chaplin Award Gala, which was held at Lincoln Center in New York. The actor was being honored with an award for his contributions to film—but Amal’s red carpet look for the affair was worthy of its very own accolade.
Usually one to embrace vintage and archival designer wears, Clooney hit the step and repeat in a fresh-off-the-runway frock instead. The magenta off-the-shoulder mini dress, with a bubble-like top and sweeping back train, was courtesy of Balenciaga designer Pierpaolo Piccioli’s spring 2026 collection. It was certainly a perfect-for-spring choice, down to the sprightly color and shortened hemline. (Amal, after all, typically loves a glamorous floor-length gown.) For more of a statement finish, Clooney also accessorized the look with gold pieces, such as a Begum Khan clutch and pointy metallic pumps.

Her decision to wear such a prominent spring runway piece was certainly a style switch-up for Clooney, who typically mines the archives for rarer, one-of-a-kind garments in the spotlight. While elegant John Galliano slip dresses have proven to be her most-worn red carpet dresses, she has also worn archival pieces from Alexander McQueen, Jean-Louis Scherrer, and Stéphane Rolland. (Mon Vintage and Tab Vintage are two vintage dealers where she often sources items.)
This latest New York moment has us wondering: Will Clooney stay in town to attend the 2026 Met Gala happening on Monday? Her last time attending the event was in 2018, when she hit the Met steps in a sweeping Richard Quinn corset top and train, paired with trousers. Maybe we can expect to see her in new-Balenciaga this year… Or perhaps she would lean into new Chanel, given she loves vintage Chanel. Take your bets here!
